Is It Worth It?

I've been toying with the idea of saving up for a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer. I love baking way more than cooking, so I know it would definitely be used, but is it worth it? Right now I have a hand-held mixer that has worked fine for the past 4 years, but occasionally gets a little smelly if I work it too hard. :)

I found factory reconditioned ones by Kitchen Aid on Amazon fo $165. All I have heard of is the Kitchen Aid brand, but is there another one out there that seems to work fine also? It's not like I'm starting my own bakery, so I was wondering if the Kitchen Aid one would be too much power.
Just curious about your opinions if you have one.

I LOVE my Kitchen Aid stand mixer. Mine is also a reconditioned one--I've had it for 8 years, with never a problem. I use it all the time, for cookies, cakes, kneading bread dough, etc. I definitely think it is well worth the money. The main thing is not to overload it above the recommended amount of flour. I've done this a few times while making whole-wheat bread, and then the motor does get sluggish and I get nervous about it burning out . . . so I've stopped doing that. :) I'm actually thinking about saving up for a bigger size since I make most of our bread and I like to make a couple loaves at once.

Anyway, there's my 2 cents . . . :)

I have a hand-held mixer that I use for whipping jobs but other than that I just hand stir everything. I mean, c'mon, how hard is it to stir up bread or cookie dough by hand? I do think those stand up mixers are very cool looking though and they come in some funky colors!

I too have a reconditioned one and I LOVE it! It saves so much time, since you can be getting other things done while it does the work! Every Christmas the other pastor's wife and I make cookies for an open house for the whole church. Needless to say that is a ton of baking! I love mine, and by the way I got a white one, we decided I didn't know that my kitchen will stay the colors it is forever. . . Just my thoughts

Thanks for this great post, Pam. I have always wanted one of the kitchen aides, but I was never sure if it was worth the money. I didn't realized that you could get a reconditioned one.

Thanks again for the help. :) I think I may be adding this to my Christmas list. :)

Thanks, girls, for your comments. Maybe I'll start putting a little money to the side, and see if any good deals come out!

I'm with Alicia--do it all by hand. :) Just kidding...although when you're a poor missionary kid, that's the only option you have to make angel food cake. :)
I'm not into big kitchen appliances, so I'm happy with my hand-held. But then again, I don't even pull that out that often, so I have no reason for a big mixer.

Hey Pam...Heston got me one this past Christmas. He has ALWAYS wanted one for me. I wasn't convinced until I starting using it. It is so nice to be able to let things beat while you are going to the fridge for eggs or butter or whatever. It is nice being hands free. I would save my pennies =)
