Slimy Dilemna

Can anyone help?? I only shop for groceries twice a month, and usually buy 1 bag of romaine lettuce (or 2 if it's Buy One Get One). I love the convenience of bagged lettuce, but it barely lasts a week. After opening, I use a chip clip to keep it closed up. Does anyone have any advice on keeping lettuce from getting rusty & slimy? Does buying a head of lettuce last longer?

We have the same problem! It helps a little bit to put a paper towel in there with the lettuce and change it whenever you have more salad, but I always dig through the stack looking for the furthest away expiration date, and make sure we will be able to eat all the lettuce by that day! I do the same with the milk. I get the strangest looks as I shuffle through the jugs...

A co-worker had a great idea the other day of buying the baby spinach for salad, then when it goes wilty, put it in a quiche or grill it in a foil packet on the grill.

We have a crisper drawer in our fridge that seems to help a litte bit, but it still seems to go bad before 2 weeks is over! Mabe a head of lettuce would last longer? I really don't know! I am looking forward to what other people say so maybe I can get some help for myself as well! =)
Good luck!

I think there might be a special tupperware thingy made for this, but I might be wrong. Lot of help, aren't I?

maybe i just have a really good fridge, but our lettuce lasts a really long time. since i am the main salad eater, i usually buy only a bag of ready to eat, romaine hearts, or baby spinach. sometimes i'll get two of those, but i never cut my leaves (whichever type they may be) and i just leave them in the package until i need more. sometimes i hardly close the bag. come to think of it..my fridge is phenominal! we had to buy a new one fairly quick into our married life b/c the one my parents let us have pooped out pretty fast. isn't it weird that after you get married you think about appliances so much? i found myself adding the new kenmore washer and dryer to an only-in-my-head wishlist!! :-)

I always had the same problem you have! I felt I was wasting more then I was eating! We just started buying the head of Red Leaf Lettuce! I usually put it in a Tupperware container then in my crisper. Sometimes it will last me up to 3 weeks!! I am finally able to eat it all before I have to throw it away!!

yeah, red leaf lettuce is another good one. i know heads of plain iceburg are super cheap, but they don't have the good flavor as other leaves do. definitely look into one of those tupperware type deals. come to think of it my mom used to have one. it was perfect for lettuce.

mommy puts the salad in a big bowl that has a lid and places a paper towel over the salad and puts the lid on it and it stays good for three or less weeks. :)
Love ya
